How a rock becomes a gem

Precision gemstone cutting is a meticulous artistry that utilizes advanced tools and techniques to amplify the innate beauty of gemstones. By cutting each gemstone to exacting parameters, we optimize its optical properties to achieve unparalleled light reflectiveness. The final product is a testament to the mastery of precision gemstone cutting, showcasing the craftsmanship involved in creating stunning gems with unparalleled precision and beauty.

Join me on this fascinating journey as I unveil the intricate steps of my gemstone cutting process below!
Slicing a piece of rough from a large piece
1. Slicing

To craft the gemstone, we start with a rough piece, cutting it into a shape close to the final product using a diamond saw blade spinning at 3000 rpm.

This powerful blade easily cuts through the tough gemstone material, setting the stage for the creation of the finished and refined gem.

2. Pre-forming

Following this, the pre-forming stage comes into play. The raw gem is affixed to a brass piece known as the dop and placed into the machine.

Using an 80 or 120 grit diamond-embedded disk (called a lap), the gem is skillfully maneuvered to eliminate surplus material, laying the groundwork for the subsequent rough cutting process.

3. Rough Cutting

The rough gem is gradually transforming into its intended shape, yet there's still excess material to be removed before fine-cutting can commence.

A pass of each facet across a 260 grit lap further refines the gem, which will expedite the upcoming fine-cutting process by eliminating additional material.

This crucial stage brings the rough gemstone close to its final dimensions.

4. Fine Cutting

The fine-cutting phase employs a 600 grit diamond lap, where minimal material removal occurs.

This step precisely eliminates any remaining scratches from the previous 260 grit stage, paving the way for the subsequent pre-polishing process.

As the final dimensions of the stone are now established, this stage marks a crucial point in crafting the finished gemstone.

5. Pre-polish

The pre-polishing phase involves the application of 8000 grit diamond powder, evenly distributed on an oil-coated lap to initiate the process.

Every facet of the fully formed gemstone undergoes individual, meticulous pre-polishing to ensure optimal readiness for the final polish.

This stage is crucial; any oversight here can make the polishing stage difficult or lead to a less-than-optimal final polish.

6. Polish

This final stage is the pinnacle of the gem production process — and its precision is paramount.

Any missteps here could invalidate the considerable time invested in the preceding steps.

The careful polishing of each facet, utilizing 100,000 diamond grit, is essential to eliminate imperfections that would otherwise be glaringly apparent.

Of particular importance is the table facet—the largest and most visible—which demands an impeccable polish to uphold the appearance of the entire gemstone.

There are no second chances at this stage. Any shortcomings in this critical area will make the gemstone unusable.

After dedicating countless hours meticulously shaping this gem from a piece of lifeless rock, it can't just sit around.

It's time to showcase its full beauty through photos and videos. Various techniques to capture its natural radiance must be employed, making sure that all the hard work and craftsmanship that was put into it truly stands out.

Lighting is crucial – it's the key difference between a gem that looks ordinary and one that exudes vibrant brilliance.

Taking the time to showcase this gem isn't just about capturing its beauty. It allows others to witness the journey and appreciate the artistry involved in creating something extraordinary from a simple rock.

8. Listing for Sale

The concluding chapter in the gemstone's journey is its listing for sale.

This entails assembling all the photos, videos, and gemstone statistics into a comprehensive presentation on a dedicated page.

With this, the gemstone is ready to find a new home with a passionate gem enthusiast where its beauty can be cherished for a lifetime.
